Journey To Mecca (2009)In the footsteps of Ibn Battuta

Karma, I believe, doesn’t appear in Islam, so maybe it was just fate that I’d be stopped in my tracks by the poster outside one of Washington DC’s Smithsonian museums.

It was Ibn Battuta who immediately caught my eye. I had just completed hours of meetings inside that same museum, discussing future cultural and educational programs to be conducted in Ibn Battuta’s birthplace – Tangier, Morocco – and here he was! U-turn back inside, where I got myself not only an IMAX ticket, but also a couple of related books to lug back in my suitcase.

Shutter Island (2010)Not up to speed

Since his Oscar-winning The Departed (2006), Martin Scorsese, the man who can perhaps lay claim to being America’s greatest living director, has been going a little ‘experimental’, with a documentary on The Rolling Stones, Shine A Light (2008) and a Spanish short, The Key To Reserva (2007) his only cinematic output.

Schindler's List (1993)‘One more person. A person, Stern.’

There are some films that bypass critical carping and can lay claim to being perhaps the greatest ever made. Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List (1993) is one such work, and it is my privilege to talk to you about it.

The legend began back in 1982, when Australian author Thomas Keneally finally succeeded in publishing his account of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who managed to save some 1,100 Jews from the death camps in The Holocaust, or Shoah, as the Jewish race refers to mankind’s darkest hour.

Sexy Beast (2000)Beast at bay? Er, no…

Jesus Christ! What got Ghandi in such a bad mood? Sexy Beast (2000) was a film I came to very late (eight years late, in fact) and only watched on the insistence of James, who would ideally like me to see every film in the world, as he seems to have, but sometimes I do heed his recommendations, if only to stop him banging on about them. It turns out he was right about this one, though. (Thank you, Colin – J).
