It’s an interesting phenomenon – cinema, down the years, has by and large served the Fourth Estate very well. Choice examples such as Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole (1951), All the President’s Men (1976) by Alan J. Pakula, and Michael Mann’s The Insider (1999) are very much ancestors to Kevin McDonald’s State of Play (2009), which was itself originally a very highly rated Paul Abbott-written BBC mini-series directed by David Yates, back in 2003.
In 1957, audiences were introduced to poor rancher Dan Evans (then played by Van Heflin) and the number-one outlaw of the land, Ben Wade (Glenn Ford), in Delmer Daves’ original. Evans has to feed his family, but the poor harvest and weather aren’t doing him any favours – and, as Wade has been captured, a volunteer is needed to escort him to the town of Contention, to put him onboard the 3:10 train to Yuma jail, hence the title. Evans signs up – and the fun begins.
As a director, Ridley Scott seems increasingly content merely to live up to some of his undeniable talent – the visionary who gave the world Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), and, more recently, Kingdom of Heaven (2005), has also been seemingly happy offering also-rans such as Hannibal (2001) and, God save us all, G.I. Jane (1993).
News reaches me that Sienna Miller is to star as Maid Marian in the upcoming re-jig of the Robin Hood story. Huh? A Robin Hood remake, surely not? Speaking to the BBC she gushed: “It’s happening. I just found out. It’s the most exciting news in the world.” She has obviously never won a Nobel Peace Prize. The new thing (also alleged to be starring Russell Crowe) will have the angle of sympathy for the Sheriff of Nottingham, facing a not-so-kind Hood. Well, I suppose they had to make it different somehow…
