Zombieland (2009)It’s a no-brainer

We love zombies here at Picturenose headquarters. From the sublime and groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead (1968), through the witty and respectful Shaun of the Dead (2004) to the contentious Zack Snyder remake of Dawn of the Dead (2004). Why contentious? Because I thought it was crap, that’s why. Running zombies? I don’t think so.

Way back in 1968, George A. Romero’s enormously influential horror Night of the Living Dead was first unleashed on unsuspecting audiences. Its deceptively simple set-up – a group of survivors barricade themselves away from apocalyptic events, the situation deteriorates as what’s outside threatens to get in – has been used so often since (to very good, very bad and indifferent effect) that it’s now largely a genre cliché.

Romero’s seminal Night of the Living Dead way back in 1968, and it would appear to have been on the money as here we are, more than 40 years later, with the world still ending not with a bang, nor for that matter a whimper, but rather with the sound of relentless shuffling, moaning, screaming and chewing.

Dark Knight Christian BaleMy name is Colin and I’m a Batman fan. I have been Batman-free for two years. There, it’s out of the way. As regular readers will know, James is the one who generally goes to see the films that have subtle metaphors and maybe actually mean something. Me? Yes, I watch them too but every so often I like escapist movies with an inordinate amount of gratuitous violence and pyrotechnics. So, it was with enormous pleasure I came to know of two movies coming up that fit the bill nicely.
