Seven 300x202 Se7en (Seven) (1995) Long is the way, and hard…

Picturenose is embarking on a bit of a ‘films we have always meant to review’ trip, and this really is one I should have done some time ago. The greatest murder mystery, ever? Discuss.

There are some cinematic experiences that will stay with you, period. Picture the scene – back in 1995, your faithful reviewer (who was, to be fair, already very much into film at that point) was in the process of discovering, in Cheltenham, just how bad he was at being a Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream Café manager.

Inglourious Basterds (2009) Quentin’s back to his best

Lt. Aldo Raine: The German will be sickened by us, the German will talk about us, and the German will fear us.

Order has been restored – Quentin Tarantino’s previous film, Death Proof (2007) suffered somewhat from being crap.

Button 150x150 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)Bright as a Button

Well, it’s certainly a long film, but this reviewer’s betting that your time will fly. Not unlike the time passed by the titular BB in David Fincher’s (by and large) masterful take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1922 novella, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Just in case you haven’t heard yet, Benjamin Button tells the story of a man (?) born suffering the infirmities of old age who lives life in reverse, growing younger with each passing year.

Fight Club I am Jack’s top ten movie

I can’t believe we haven’t covered this one yet. Total Film readers voted it number 4 in the top 100 movies of all time in 2005, and Empire readers voted it a respectable number 10 out of 500 greatest movies of all time in 2008. That’s some mighty kudos for a movie less than 10 years old, voted for by people who actually pay to go and see a movie, not critics. Even the author of the book, Chuck Palahniuk, believes it to be an improvement on his original work.

Burn after ReadingIntelligence overload

They have been with us from as far back as Blood Simple (1984) and, following their Oscar-winning epiphany with the overrated No Country for Old Men (2007) (which should never have taken Best Film and Best Director away from Paul Thomas Anderson’s sublime There Will Be Blood (2007)), Ethan and Joel Coen return with a largely good-natured romp – one with more than a few echoes of what is les freres Coen’s actual masterpiece, The Big Lebowski (1998).

1041315 79427041 Zombie Survival 101 Here at Picturenose Central, we are in shock. After a furious bidding war, we fell just $6,999,999 short of the $7 million required to publish exclusive pictures of the Pitt/Jolie twins, so instead, we have an amusing picture of a horse. We thank you for your understanding at this difficult time. Read the rest of this entry »

Babel 300x210 Babel (2006)Towering triumph

Superb. Just out-and-out superb. If you came for a scene-by-scene deconstruction and to hear how utterly pretentious it is, look away now. Regular readers will know that I have the attention span of a not-too-bright goldfish when it comes to films over ninety minutes long, but this one is two and a half hours or thereabouts and I don’t believe there was a single foot of film wasted. I am in serious danger of sounding like a union representative for the Spanish Film Council, having recently given The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005) such a blinding review, but the writing and direction are so tight and fresh that I believe we should hand the film industry to Spain for a few years.
