2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)‘Keep Watching the Skies!’

OK, OK, I promise that I am not going to do every genre of film, up to and including 10 Best Films Involving Otters, but such was the pleasing reaction to my previous list, 10 Best Horror Films, I decided that there was still room to include an appreciation of the genre that is (unless, of course, you count comedy) the nearest to the macabre, namely one that frequently produces films, such as Alien (1979) and John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982), that can safely be labelled as ‘crossovers’. Fair enough? It might just be me, but I think that this list may produce a few more squabbles than its predecessor. Over to you, Gentle Reader(s)… :-)

The IslandBay rocks?

Picture the scene. The remains of a particularly spicy fajita meal on the table, a cold beer, and an unwillingness to change channels. OK, apart from the fajitas, this is pretty much every evening for me. Last night, however, was different.  I had seen the trailers on the telly for the past week, and have to admit that I was intrigued by The Island (2005).

District 9Just a ‘prawn’ in their game…

Director Neill Blomkamp couldn’t have made a better first impression with his debut feature. Set in modern-day Johannesburg, South Africa, but in reality depicting events taking place ‘the day after tomorrow’, Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell’s screenplay depicts an ethnic-minority crisis with a twist – the inhabitants of the so-called District 9 ghetto slum are not of this Earth.

BodyofLies 150x150 Body of Lies (2008)Not-so-great Scott

As a director, Ridley Scott seems increasingly content merely to live up to some of his undeniable talent – the visionary who gave the world Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), and, more recently, Kingdom of Heaven (2005), has also been seemingly happy offering also-rans such as Hannibal (2001) and, God save us all, G.I. Jane (1993).

logo bfi 1 BFI British Film Institute, or Bad Film Ideas? To celebrate the 75th birthday of the BFI Southbank, the British Film Institute asked 75 celebrities (some you may have heard of, the rest appear to be fillers) for their favourite film.

The idea behind this was to produce a list of ‘classic movies of the future’. Better yet, the top five as voted by the celebrities and the public alike, will be screened at the BFI Southbank from January 2009. If you go to their web site, you can read the responses to the two questions:

  • Which one film would you wish to share with future generations?
  • What excites you about the future of the moving image?
  • All the links are clickable, and the various celebs will tell you what they voted for and why. You are also invited to nominate your own choice(s) and given the opportunity to provide a comment.
