Unless, of course, you know different?
Some actors are just so good that we can forgive them their little peccadillos – let’s face it, George Clooney is a top bloke, but not all of his films are great, and not all the roles he casts himself in are well-advised. And Johnny Depp – for every Donnie Brasco (1997) there is a Secret Window (2004) (come on – I love JD, but this one was crap). Here, then, Picturenose celebrates the fact that our favourite actors can be as screwed up as the rest of us when a large amount of cash is waved in their direction.
Jeremy Slater is pleased to discover a ‘movie of a video game’ that doesn’t insult the intelligence…
Most grown-ups and many moviegoers would shy away, these days, from films that appear to be based on PC games, and who can blame them? The sub-genre has produced some of the worst films ever, outdoing the lousiest of horror gore fests or slushiest happy-ever-after romantic comedies by a multiplex mile. As proof, consider Steven E. de Souza’s 1994 outing Street Fighter in which Kylie Minogue joined forces with Jean-Claude Van Damme, or Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) (or The Cradle of Life (2003), take your pick) which, despite Angelina Jolie’s pulchritudinous assets, fell flat.

Ah yes, “utter crap from the get-go”.
Hmmm, yes, it’s that time of year again – regular Picturenose, Expatica and European Film Awards readers will already know how ‘successful’ I normally am when it comes to picking the film, players, director and writers ahead of the most glittering night in the cinematic calendar. Will my predictions for 22 February 2009 be any more accurate, one wonders? Only one way to find out…
There’s always one, isn’t there? Well, while Clint Eastwood’s latest effort is a long way off being average, and Angelina Jolie’s performance (pretty much) deserves the praise that is being heaped upon it, just in time for the Oscar noms come 23 January, Changeling, in the opinion of your faithful Picturenose correspondent, nevertheless leaves something of a gap between justifiable expectations and end product.
