Hard to forget

Robert Pattinson has become a household name in the past couple of years due to his performances in Twilight (2008) and New Moon (2009) and I expect his featuring in Allen Coulter’s Remember Me (2010) brought in a lot of viewers for the film’s the opening week. However, as I nestled into my seat, I was unsure as to what I should expect. As a huge Twilight fan I wondered if I would be able to get Edward Cullen out of my mind. But, in fact, I was pleasantly overwhelmed with the movie.
Pattinson plays a rough 21-year-old named Tyler who’s struggling in college and having a hard relationship with his father (Pierce Brosnan) but who has a warm heart when it comes to his younger sister and mother. The diversity in the attitudes shown by the character reveal Pattinson at his best as an actor.
The film begins in 1991, with a brutal mugging-murder on the subway in Brooklyn – my girlfriends and I looked at each other in shock, as no one had expected such a tragedy in the opening scene. Ten years later, we are introduced to Tyler, who is subsequently shown as being beaten by a policeman (the husband of the mother who was murdered on the subway ten years previously) after a night out with his roommate Aidan (Tate Allington). Aidan then discovers that the policeman has a daughter, Ally (Emilie de Ravin, Public Enemies (2009)) and dares Tyler to ask her out on a date and make her fall for him, to get back at her father…
As the credits rolled, I looked around at my two girlfriends – we all had streaks of mascara running down our faces. All I can say is that the film is worth anyone’s time and I would encourage any romance lovers to see it.
