Clint? Complacent?

There’s always one, isn’t there? Well, while Clint Eastwood’s latest effort is a long way off being average, and Angelina Jolie’s performance (pretty much) deserves the praise that is being heaped upon it, just in time for the Oscar noms come 23 January, Changeling, in the opinion of your faithful Picturenose correspondent, nevertheless leaves something of a gap between justifiable expectations and end product.

Intelligence overload

They have been with us from as far back as Blood Simple (1984) and, following their Oscar-winning epiphany with the overrated No Country for Old Men (2007) (which should never have taken Best Film and Best Director away from Paul Thomas Anderson’s sublime There Will Be Blood (2007)), Ethan and Joel Coen return with a largely good-natured romp - one with more than a few echoes of what is les freres Coen’s actual masterpiece, The Big Lebowski (1998).

Reeves (Ray Winstone): I’ve got the Carregio in here.
Tom Ripley: Well, you’re not coming in.
Reeves: I’m fucking coming in.
Tom Ripley: No, because it’s not a Carregio, it’s a Correggio. Just like it’s not tacco but ta-a-cco. Not pasto but pasta, see? Your entire education comes from classic car magazine and you dress like you’re on a condom run for the mob. By the way, it isn’t a Correggio, it’s a fake Rembrandt and until you know that, you’re not coming in with me.
